The Garment Manufacturing Flow Chart
The Garment Manufacturing Flow Chart
This is our industry’s version of a map. When you feel lost or overwhelmed, come back to this. Each step matters. Each step is progress.
Pattern Design – Don’t overthink the perfect sketch for your pattern maker. Just start drafting a rough sketch, find images online shops, buy samples or find samples from your closet but make sure it’s CLEAN. Something is better than nothing.
Sample Making – Seeing your idea in 3D will often unlock the clarity that sketching can’t.
Production Pattern – Once the fit is approved, get those seam allowances and notches locked in.
Grading – One of the most technical steps. It may be tedious, but it’s the backbone of scalability.
Marker Making – This is where money is saved or wasted. Optimize your layout and reduce waste.
Spreading – Accurate spreading = accurate cutting. Quality starts here.
Cutting – Whether by hand or machine, this is precision work. Mistakes here multiply down the line.
Sorting/Bundling – Keep your bundles organized. It reduces confusion during sewing.
Sewing / Assembling – The heart of it all. Make sure your construction is repeatable and efficient.
Pressing / Finishing – Pressing isn’t just cosmetic — it sets the tone for professional results.
Final Inspection – Don’t skip this. Spotting issues here saves time, money, and reputation.
Packing – Presentation matters. How your garments arrive is part of your brand.
Dispatch – The final handoff. A moment to celebrate (and then prep for the next one).
When You’re Feeling Off, Pick One Step
You don’t have to do it all at once. Just choose one:
No inspiration? Work on your pattern corrections, review your references with a friend or colleague etc.
Brain fog? Organize your cutting table or work area is critical.
Feeling stuck? Go inspect samples. There’s always something to learn.
Low energy? Steam and press — it’s repetitive, calming, and satisfying.
This industry isn’t always glamorous, but it is consistent. When you return to the process, momentum follows.
Final Thought
If you’re a designer, developer, or production lead feeling tired — you’re not alone.
The process is demanding. The pressure is real. But you’re still here, and that’s something to be proud of.
So, the next time you feel like skipping the day’s task list:
Come back to the chart. Pick one step. Keep going.
Progress over perfection. Always.
