I get asked sometimes, “Why do you charge for an initial consultation?” The answer is simple. Our first meeting is not just a casual conversation. It’s a strategy session.
Can you start a clothing brand on a small scale? Yes, absolutely. Everyone starts somewhere. You don’t need to launch with a huge collection or have everything figured out from day one. But it’s important to understand the process, the costs involved, and what it takes to grow a brand the right way.
When someone wants to start a clothing line, there are important questions that need to be answered before a single pattern is made or a sample is sewn. What is your budget? How many styles are you launching? Who is your customer? What is your price point? Have you considered sampling, grading, fabric minimums, production costs, testing, and manufacturing?
If you have already launched your business, developed your brand, and you’re ready to create your next collection, that’s a different stage. At that point, you may be ready to hire professionals and build your development team. Understanding the different roles in fashion, such as technical designers, pattern makers, sample makers, manufacturers, and production teams, is important so you know who you need to bring into your process.
